SFOF Unilever Letter Coordination
Published on August 5, 2022Communications between SFOF President Derek and Arizona Deputy State Treasurer Mark Swenson show how SFOF is closely involved in deciding which treasurers offices send out particular advocacy letters. In this instance, SFOF decided that Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Lee should release a letter to Unilever, asking that the company "override" Ben & Jerry's decision end sales of their products in Israel. SFOF's stance on this particular issue also shows how in addition to attacking climate policy, the organization also weighs in on social issues.
In a November 18, 2021 email to SFOF affiliated treasurers, Kreifels wrote "the Executive Committee ([Treasurers] Murante, Fitzpatrick, Milligan, Dougall, Kreifels) will make a decision on how SFOF will proceed with this." On December 7, 2021 Kreifels wrote that "the decision has been made that this letter should come directly from Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Lee's Office."
The final December 9, 2021 letter, signed by Treasurer Lee along with six other SFOF state treasurers, is not on SFOF letterhead and there is no indication that SFOF is a coordinating body.
